Behind the Ghungroo: A Day in the Life of a Kathak Student at BSMV

What is it like to be a Kathak student in Silchar? At Beenachchhandam Sangeet Mahavidyalaya (BSMV), the rhythm of ghungroos, the discipline of classical art, and the joy of community come together in every student’s journey. This article gives you a real glimpse into the everyday life of a student learning Kathak at BSMV.

6:00 AM – Riyaaz and Morning Practice

For serious Kathak learners, the day begins early. Some of our senior students start their day with self-practice or riyaaz, focusing on tatkaar (footwork), chakkars (spins), and recitation of bols. The quiet morning hours help in building stamina, clarity, and a deeper connection with the rhythm of tabla and taal.

At BSMV, students are taught to value self-discipline and sadhana, just as in the guru-shishya tradition. Learn more about it here: Guru-Shishya Parampara in Kathak

9:00 AM – School Time & Balancing Academics

Our students are also regular school-goers. BSMV ensures that dance does not interfere with academic life. Most classes are scheduled in the late afternoon or weekends, allowing students to balance both worlds with ease. In fact, many of our students report improved focus and confidence in school thanks to their dance training. Read more: Classical Arts Build Confidence

3:30 PM – Arrival at BSMV

As school ends, students head to our campus in Silchar, where they’re welcomed into a peaceful, creative space. Before class, there’s time to interact with peers, revise compositions, or help juniors—a reflection of the family-like culture of BSMV.

Parents often share how this environment has helped their children grow in both character and competence. Discover why: Why Parents Choose BSMV

4:00 PM – Kathak Class Begins

Classes begin with warm-ups and a prayer to Saraswati. Then follows:

  • Tatkaar practice (footwork drills)
  • Tihai and tukra recitation
  • New compositions in teen taal or jhap taal
  • Performance rehearsals for upcoming events

Advanced students are also trained in theory, abhinaya (expressive storytelling), and tabla accompaniment, forming a well-rounded understanding of Kathak.

5:00 PM – Breaks & Cultural Conversations

Learning doesn’t stop at the end of class. Students often engage in informal baithaks (discussions), where they talk about the origins of a piece, legendary gurus, or how Kathak connects to other Indian arts like Nazrul Nritya or Rabindra Nritya. 6:00 PM – Production Rehearsals & Solo Practice

Evenings are sometimes reserved for rehearsals—our students perform at local festivals, national events, and BSMV’s own productions like “Nritya Arpan” or “Kathak Sandhya”. See our recent productions and performances.

7:00 PM – Heading Home with Inspiration

As students return home, tired but inspired, they carry more than just dance steps—they carry discipline, passion, and the grounding of Indian classical tradition. Many continue practicing at home, supported by parents and guided by BSMV’s instructors.
